Do you love a chalupa? Then you'll love Chica!

Chica Chalupa appears to be a Belgian Shepherd Malinois/Basset Hound mix about 1 year old, and has the classic short legs and longer body of the Basset, and a chalupa - besides being a delicious Mexican food - is a kind of long, low-sided boat common in Mexico. In any case, Chica is cute, cute, cute! You can definitely see the Basset Hound in Chica - she has the short legs and long body. She's a "misfit" kind of cute, and everywhere she goes, she gets comments on how cute she is!

Chica is sweet and affectionate and LOVES to shower her people with kisses. She also LOVES to play with toys, and has a special skill at finding a toy's vulnerabilities and capitalizing on them (i.e., shredding them!) She enjoys regular daycare play sessions with other dogs at Bow chika Wow Town, and does best in smaller groups of dogs. Once she has gotten some energy out, she's happy to chill out and cuddle. She is very treat-motivated and is doing well learning the "sit" command. Her body is one big muscle, so she's very strong. Don't be fooled by her short legs, either - if motivated enough, she can jump over 4-ft. kennel walls.

Chica has been living in a kennel/daycare situation primarily, so she's going to need some time and guidance to learn basic house manners, but she is smart and very food motivated, so we think she will catch on quickly with consistent guidance. She keeps her kennel clean, so with the help of a crate, we think house training in her new home will be pretty straightforward. Because she hasn't had any home environment exposure, a home with no or older respectful children would be best, as she might accidentally knock over small children with all her exuberance and she does sometimes use her mouth in play. She's good with other dogs, but kitties are an unknown at this point. She can be tested with both kitties and kids if needed.

Chica's new family should be prepared to work on house training, crate training, walking on a leash, and good house manners. We recommend that all our dogs attend basic obedience classes because they help build self-confidence, aid in socialization with new dogs and people, and are a great opportunity for quality bonding time between the pup and her new human family. A fenced yard is the ideal safe place for your pup to romp and play, but if that's not an option then daily leash walks with opportunities to play off-leash in a dog park are the next best thing. Dogs of all ages benefit from mental exercise, too - think puzzle toys, treat dispensing toys, and games. Puppies are definitely a lot of work to raise. This is very true for Chica! Dogs take time, patience, consistency, and commitment, but the confident, well-mannered adult dog they will become, makes it so worth it! Chica is so friendly and outgoing, she's gonna make a GREAT companion or family pet!

If you love a chalupa and are excited about raising Chica Chalupa and watching her blossom, fill out an application today! Chalupa kisses are waiting for you!
